This position includes a variety of in-office and field tasks associated with land surveying and civil engineering projects.


  1. Performing field work associated with land surveying, engineering and construction projects; performing survey computations and data collection; CAD and drafting.
  2. Engage in making plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers.
  3. Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles; prepares field notes and drawings; and performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, and flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, tying out existing intersection ties, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  4. Prepare drawings in AutoCAD format of construction activities.
  5. Maintain condition and adjustment of surveying equipment.
  6. Supervise one or more surveying Technician and surveying Trainee personnel.
  7. Coordinate surveying activities with the assigned engineer and superintendent to meet the construction requirements.
  8. Perform additional assignments per supervisor's direction.


Educational and experience requirements include: bachelor's degree preferred, minimum of 2 years technical engineering/surveying training plus minimum 5-10 years construction surveying experience with AutoCAD or equivalent combinations of training and related experience. Thorough knowledge of and ability to use all surveying equipment & techniques essential including Trimble GPS Technology, data collectors, robotic and conventional units as well as general computer knowledge. Ability to accurately read blueprints and calculate shapes (geometric, etc.) also required. Familiar with all surveying techniques, including but not limited to: construction staking, boundary surveying and topographic mapping. Accomplished with AutoCAD, Carlson, Trimble Business Center and Civil 3D.


Environmental aspects (weather, heights, etc) play important part in this position since one is constantly out-of-doors. Occasional travel and extended out of town stays required.
